Route description
The river Janis (Janisjoki) originates in friendly Finland. The river crosses the border near the village of Värtsila and runs vigorously at a trot to Lake Ladoga, with which it rejoins in the area of Hiidenselga Bay.
Rafting along the river Janisjoka is of interest during the whole season of open water, as it is the most full-flowing river of Northern Ladoga. There are 19 obstacles on the river from the village of Janisjärvi to the village of Lyaskelja, three of which are impassable hydroelectric dams.

Day 1
We meet on a traditional place – in MegaParnas at the parking place, regroup and move out on highway A-121 (“Sortavala”) to the north. We arrive to Sortavala, leave the cars on parking and drive to Janisjarvi. (On the way to Sortavala, you can stop by the restaurant “Gustav Winter”, an authentic Karelian cuisine which is so fond of priests in cassocks. It’s not difficult to understand the “holy” people, because in fact in a modern interpretation Karelian cuisine of the restaurant abounds with moose with creamy pearlk, roasted chicken giblets, lazy dumplings with boar meat, fish dishes from Ladoga and Onega Lakes and the zest – Ladoga shrimp.) Then a short walk to the bank of Janisjoki river, and from the parking place we are admiring the old railway bridge, and then we have a dinner and go to bed. (?). In the morning, we have an early rise
Day 2
Breakfast and go, conquer the water element!
The first obstacle on the route is a barbed dam, right behind it we go to the water. Behind the weir begins a chain of simple quicknesses and spreads.
Soon the river will be blocked by a second dam, where we will be able to explore Hemyakoski Canyon, in the middle of the river, unfortunately, not passable due to lack of water. Behind the dam there is a row of shivers and thresholds a little bit harder.
The end of the rafting on the first day is the most beautiful threshold of Petrakoski (in the lowlands of 1 HP), where we will stay overnight.
Day 3
During the third rafting day we will go the rest of the way in Janisjoki, along the way we will admire the former power of the threshold Fizruk (6 b.c.) in Lyaskela and complete our rafting in the village Hijdenselga, located at the mouth of Janisjoki. If there is time left, we will climb Hidenvuori mountain, which offers a stunning view of the Ladoga skerries and cross the skerries towards Sortavala, where cars are parked.
