ABOUT THE ROUTE - EXPERIENCING ROUGH SEAS

Four years later, we return to the Western Archipelago in Northern Ladoga. Name of the event this year’s “Experiencing rough seas” is no accident. The area of the Western Archipelago is an area of wind-driven surge currents with a two-layer water circulation and density currents with a speed of up to 32 cm per second. During surges, a current flows into the bay from above, and from 50 meters to the bottom there is a stream directed into the lake from the shore. During overflows, the opposite pattern is observed – warm surface waters rush into the lake, and cold deep waters take their place. Density currents extend to a depth of up to 75 meters, they arise under the influence of different water densities caused by unequal warming of the deep and shallow parts of Ladoga. Warmer waters along the coasts, having a lower density and a larger volume, rush to the center of the lake. But under the influence of the daily rotation of the Earth, they begin to deviate to the right from their original path, creating a circular flow directed counterclockwise. Therefore, “Rough Seas 2024” is an event where you will fully experience the power and beauty of the wild nature of the Western Archipelago. Synchronize your internal frequencies, tune into the healing nature of Northern Ladoga, to connect with your inner world and turn your weekend into a mini vacation – there is no time to be bored here – get ready to be surprised – this is just the beginning, because our hikes are always more than it seems at first glance.))

Day 1

We meet at a traditional, historical place – MegaParnas in the parking lot, regroup and move along the A-121 highway (“Sortavala”) to the north. We arrive in the village of Kurkieki in the Lahdenpokh district of Karelia. …Everything is later, first we have lunch at the restaurant at the KalaRanta fishery, whose rainbow trout farms in the Karelian fjords, we will sail later by boat. We leave the cars in the parking lot at the KalaRanta restaurant near the slip, where we launch the boat. “Dear passengers, Last Call” – you take places in the boat and find yourself in another Universe, with other delights of depth. The cool water splashes of Ladoga, the hot flame of the fire in the parking lot, the joy of communication will bring you rejoicing, delight and elation. Just relax and forget about the hustle and bustle as you sail past Karelian rocks, bays and islands, among which we will find a place for a base camp. The tentative camp sites are shown on the map below.

Day 2

A leisurely morning wake-up, coffee and a choice of programs to suit your taste – swim and sunbathe, explore the fjords from the sea or take a boat trip to the Ivan-Chai restaurant, located within a radius of 15-20 miles from our camp, the restaurant has a pier that you can enter from the water.

You may want to go fishing, catch deep-sea whitefish or one of the seven species of salmon living in Ladoga – salmon, trout, taimen. Maybe you will be so lucky that you will be able to catch the Ladoga eel? He (the eel) breeds off the coast of Central America – in the Sargasso Sea. Then its leaf-like larvae swim with the waters of the warm Gulf Stream to the shores of Europe and the Scandinavian Peninsula for three years. Here the larvae turn into young eels, which usually enter rivers and lakes on spring nights, including the rivers of Karelia and Ladoga. The eel lives in freshwater Ladoga for 9-12 years. Then the eel begins to migrate to the ocean, and its appearance and blood composition change dramatically. After entering the Baltic Sea, the eel moves along the coast to the west, then disappears into the depths of the Atlantic Ocean so that in a few years its descendants will make their way back to the Karelian rivers and lakes on bright spring nights, so that you can, with a glass of cold beer in a boat, enjoy fishing on this amazing and strong fish at the main event of June – the Rough Seas 2024 festival =)

about us

It happens that when a person wakes up, he asks himself with involuntary fright: am I already thirty?.. forty… Fifty years? How did life pass so soon? How did death come so close? Death is like a fisherman who has caught a fish in his net and leaves it in the water for a while: the fish is still swimming, but the net is on it, and the fisherman will snatch it — when he wants.
