About the route
Behind the ancient Karelian village of Kolatselga, from the lake Tulmozero the river Tulemajoki (suffix -joki means “river” in Sámi) is our goal for the summer rafting in 2023.
The Karelian-Finnish epos “Kalevala” describes dark waters of Manala – the river of the dead, and Tulemajoki river waters in the sun look absolutely black. It is up to you to decide whether it is a fiction.
In general, the river is quiet and picturesque. There are rock outcrops on the banks and the whole rocky walls, boulders. There are small shivers and rifts.
By tradition, a star of the culinary world – “Heston Blumenthal” Borisovo Grivsky is invited to the rafting, to offer you a bright gastronomic experience. What will surprise the culinary expert this time? An innovative menu? Multi-sensory cooking complemented by creative serving in an authentic rafting setting? Cancer soup with crushed meteorite and lavender? Cheerios on a spit? Chicken liver parfait – “Meat Fruit”? “Pineapple hop pie” from an 1810 recipe? ….Precious mystery.
The 2023 holistic fusion concept, inspired by the elements of earth, fire, air and water, is an opportunity to restore mental, physical, emotional and spiritual balance on par with inner equilibrium.

Day 1
We meet at the traditional place – the MegaParnas parking lot, regroup and move north along the A-121 (“Sortavala”). We arrive to Sortavala, leave our cars in a parking place at a man’s yard with a spaceship (the very last year’s Hundai Staria). We unload into the spaceship, and the uncle throws us to the coordinates 61°64’N – 32°14’E, near lake Tulmozero, where we start rafting. On arrival in Sortavala, before the start of the rafting you have a choice of two restaurants, which will change your idea of luxury camping forever – “Gustav Winter” and “Berg’s House”.
Day 2
Holistic breakfast in the new original interpretation of “Heston Blumenthal” with fragrant spices and spicy herbs and go ahead – conquer the water element!
Basic rolls:
1. Threshold “Wooden”, the second category of complexity, length – 100 m landmark – the island (stone ridge). Wide, powerful river with shafts up to 1 m. Coming down the stream.
River “Kayfovaya”, the second category of complexity, length – 350-400 m S-shaped shiver with high ramparts. Coming down the main stream.
On ichthyofauna – the river, as if a lot of crayfish, but to catch them need to be able to, as crayfish cleverly include back gear (as many of you) and very quickly hide. The woods are inhabited by lynx, marten, n*t wolverine, badger, otter, beaver, wolf, fox.
By evening we are looking for a parking lot. Here you are sure to find complex harmonious dishes, the young culinary innovator in the atmosphere of warm and sincere Karelian hospitality.
Perhaps this time you will be able to take a new look at the traditional bathing culture and feel the effects of the treatments that affect all the senses. Whether you will use natural date oil soap, nigella and rose scrub, a wrap with Moroccan volcanic clay or gel with aragon oil – depends on one of the crew members who for years have been threatening to open a portable spa center on the banks of the Karelian River.
Day 3
On the third rafting day we reach the end of the route – Pienjoki HPP №25, coordinates 61°40’N – 31°88’E. There we also book an evacuation, a man with a spaceship. On the way back we stop at the “House of Berg” where you finally find harmony and recuperate in a comfortable environment.
